SPARTANBURG, S.C.—The Assault on Mt. Mitchell presented by the Greenville Health System has been named to Gran Fondo Guide’s “Top U.S. Gran Fondos for 2018” as the Southeast’s premier cycling event. The Assault on Marion has been recognized as a Median Fondo.
“The Assaults Gran Fondo is a ‘Bucket List’ ride that should be experienced by every road cyclist,” Mark Harding, Marketing and Advertising Executive for Gran Fondo Guide, said.
The Assaults draws nearly 1,000 cyclists from around the world each year and is one of the highlights in the U.S. amateur cycling season. Started in 1974 and in true “North American Gran Fondo format”, the event has transformed into a premier Gran Fondo offering participant’s electronic timing, 10 rest stations that offer food, beverages, first aid and toilets. There is also SAG and mechanical support available along the route to provide assistance for riders.
The ride has two distances—the 102-mile Gran Fondo that ends at the summit of Mount Mitchell in North Carolina containing over 11,000 vertical feet of climbing. Most riders finish in less than 12 hours with the leaders finishing in under six hours. It is considered one of the toughest rides in the Southeast.
The 47-mile Medio Fondo, the Assault on Marion, allows riders of all abilities to enjoy the challenge, with rolling hills, challenging climbs and compelling North Carolina scenery, without the 28-mile trek to the top of the mountain.
In true “Italian mountain finish format”, participants are also able to drop off a small bag during Packet pick-up that is transported to the top of Mt. Mitchell or Marion, allowing them to dry off and get changed. Participants can then enjoy food and beverages. Buses also transport Mitchell riders off the Mountain to the Tom Johnson Campground to enjoy post-ride festivities.
The 2018 Assaults on Mt. Mitchell and Marion presented by Greenville Health System is set for Monday, May 14, 2018. To register, riders may visit The Assaults website – www.theassaults.com. Registration closes Saturday, May 12 at noon, however, participants may register in person at Packet Pick-Up on Sunday, May 13.
