On January18, 2019, flourish had the privilege of producing the 8thAnnual Shuck-A-Rama for the Brain Injury Association of South Carolina (BIASC) in the Downtown Historic District of Charleston, S.C.
This outside, covered event was held at the Visitor Center Bus, which was transformed from a driveway for tourist busses into a low-country spectacle. With the use of burlap linens, lanterns, and greenery adorned with oyster garland, the venue had become a spectacular sight for anyone passing by on that crisp January evening.
The entertainment, provided by the Bluestone Ramblers, was a sublime addition to this low-country, oyster-themed fundraiser. With the presence of local celebrities such as John Tecklenburg, Mayor of Charleston, Charlie T. RiverDog from the Charleston RiverDogs, Trooper Bob and Emily Gracey of ABC News 4, local advocate Tate Mikell and former Miss Upstate S.C. Emily Yarbrough, the event could not have gone better!
The Bluestone Ramblers opened the evening with bluegrass tunes, followed by introductions from Mayor John Tecklenburg, who expressed the great need for the community’s support of the BIASC, and a few remarks from the Executive Director of BIASC, Joyce Davis. After sharing how BIASC has impacted the community and how this organization has been able to contribute to the well-being of those suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI), the evening transitioned to more bluegrass tunes and plenty of oyster shucking.
Later in the evening, Tate Mikell and Emily Yarbrough were able to share their own personal stories on how they have suffered traumatic brain injuries and how organizations like BIASC have helped them on their journey to recovery. Following these heartfelt moments, Emily Gracey, the marvelous emcee for the evening, hosted the live auction of sorts for 80 trauma bags to be funded throughout the evening. This resulted in a final count of 117 trauma bags being funded on behalf of the Brain Injury Association of South Carolina.
Afterwards, guests continued to shuck oysters, eat chili, drink and make more generous bids on the silent auction that also took place at the event. The silent auction featured many beautiful packages including a gorgeous oyster painting by Emily Yarbrough, a $200 gift certificate and swag from The Darling Oyster Bar, and hospitality packages donated by Bennett Hospitality.
With every event there are bumps in the road and hurdles to jump over, but this Friday evening was one for the books. Thanks to the beautiful weather, a wonderful venue, fantastic music and, of course, great oysters, the Shuck-A-Rama was a huge hit. We were able to create an elegant environment in the middle of a Bus Shed and make the 8thAnnual Shuck-A-Rama the best one to date!
